Visiting the Denver Mint is one of the coolest free things to do in Colorado and here's what you need to know if you go.

The United States Mint produces billions of coins every year, and the Denver Mint is one of just six facilities in the nation responsible for coin production. I remember going to the Denver Mint when I was a kid and seeing how the coins are made is something I have never forgotten.

The Denver Mint, located at 320 W. Colfax Avenue, offers free tours but there are a few things you should know before you go.

* Tours are free, but you have to get a same-day ticket. You can not get tickets days in advance. Tickets are distributed on a first-come-first-served basis beginning at 7 a.m. Monday through Thursday. When the tickets are gone they are gone. There is a limit of five tickets per person.

*Six tours are offered each day: 8:00 a.m., 9:30 a.m., 11:00 a.m., 12:30 p.m., 2:00 p.m., and 3:30p.m.

* No children are allowed under the age of 7

* All adults need to have a photo I.D.

* You need to be at the tour entrance on Cherokee Street 30 minutes prior to the scheduled tour time

* Items not allowed on the tour are purses, bags, fanny packs, tote bags, backpacks, packages, strollers, food and drink, tobacco products, weapons, and personal protective devices

*Camera and cell phone photography is prohibited, and cell phones must be turned off when entering the building

* Tours last about 45 minutes

* There is no parking at the facility, but there is parking available within a few blocks

* The facility is typically closed on and around holidays, so you will want to check and make sure it is opening prior to your planned visit
