Much to my surprise, the middle of my driveway is now home for two killdeer who decided it was the perfect place to raise their family; it's also inconvenient for mine.

Killdeer nest on the ground. Normally in western Colorado you'll find the nests in dry open areas. This isn't the first time the birds have nested on our property, but why they chose one of the most unsafe places possible escapes me.

These squatters, who haven't even offered to pay rent, have made us take precautionary measures to protect the nest from getting run over. They're not very nice tenants either when we try to visit and check on them.

With any luck, we'll soon have some photos of killdeer chicks. The small birds leave the nest quickly after hatching. So, I'm hoping the proud protective parents will let me get a few baby pictures before they do.
