Parenting is never simple, but saying these two things when you think you child might be lying to you may be the easiest way to get them to tell the truth.

With our two children, my wife has always had a 'sixth sense' when it comes to knowing  we were being lied to. For me, it's been much more difficult, so it's important to be able to get the kids to tell the truth up front.

According to the book, 'NurtureShock: New Thinking About Children,' young kids are typically lying to try to please you.

Parents who understand the thinking and motivation behind the lie will be able to choose a response that will make it easier for their child to tell the truth.

Here are examples of two sentences you can use to get your child to tell the truth.

  • I won't be upset with you if you did it.
  • If you tell the truth, I will be really happy.

Erick Barker in an interview with Lifehacker, explains why these sentences work. "..Telling kids that the truth will make a parent happy challenges the kid's original thought that hearing good news, not the truth, is what will please the parent."

A third possible sentence to use that may reduce the chance of your child lying to you. "I'm about to ask you a question.  But before I do that, will you promise to tell the truth?"
