Top Halloween Costumes are Super, Frightening and Fun

With Halloween fast approaching, there are a lot of characters to choose from for those planning to dress up for the holiday.

According to the National Retail Federation (NRF), the top selling adult costume this year is a witch. The popularity of this costume has made it the top seller for the last 11 years. In 2015, there are expected to be 4.3 million Halloween witches.

For children, the top selling costume, also for the 11th year in a row, is a princess. It's estimated there will be 3.2 million princesses dressed up for Halloween.

NRF President and CEO Matthew Shay says a part of Halloween costume ideas come from what's popular at the time.

As we’ve seen for several years, Hollywood and pop culture both have a tremendous impact on how adults and their children decide to dress the part each Halloween, and it’s evident some of the biggest newsmakers of the year will be out in full force this fall.”

Still, the most popular costumes for adults are are perennial favorites. The Top Costumes for Adults include:

1. Witch
2. Animal
3. Batman Character
4. Zombie
5. Star Wars Character

The Most Popular Children's costumes tend to be less scary and more fun:

1. Princess
2. Batman Character
3. Superhero/Action Figure
4. Animal
5. Disney 'Frozen' Character

People who dress up their pets, picked a pumpkin or hot dog costume as the top choices of costumes for their furry friends.

The NRF survey also found that Minions and Star Wars characters were popular costume choices for adults, children and pets.
