The times we live in are necessitating changes in the way we travel, transact business, play, and shop. It may be time to change the way we dwell peacefully in our homes by outlawing door-to-door solicitations. While there are plenty of legitimate door-to-door salesmen - and probably most of them are legitimate and decent - there are enough bad apples out there that we need to do away with this long-standing practice.

I came to this conclusion after reading the story on 9 News.com about a woman in Boulder who was attacked by a man - working for a legitimate company - selling magazine subscriptions. The man reportedly  pushed his way in and began groping the woman. She went to get some money, hoping that he would then go away, but instead he attacked her.

Clearly, this is not the first time this has happened. There have been rapes and murders in similar situation, as well as a number of less threatening incidence. A listener this morning shared the story about a woman at her door wanting to come in to the house to gather water samples for testing, but grew frustrated and angry when she was not allowed to enter the house.

Not too long ago my wife encountered a young man selling subscriptions who became belligerent when she refused to make a purchase --and he actually tried to open the locked screen door. That is a terrifying moment, particularly for a woman.

It's kind of like the way we travel has changed and all the security measures that are now in place. A vast majority of air travelers are decent people who offer absolutely no threat of any kind. But, it is that dreaded few that, for safety's sake,  have caused us to make dramatic and extreme transformations in our travel processes.

Think about the security process you go through at a concert or sporting event in Denver. It hasn't always been like that. But, times have changed, and so have the rules.

It is sad that our world has come to this, but the fact is, it has, and what can any of us do about it? It's the world in which we live. Never mind that I don't want to be disturbed by a knock at the door when I'm sitting down to dinner. More than that, I don't want my wife to have to be fearful because of a knock at the door by some well-intentioned solicitor, who may actually be a violent and threatening fiend.

It's time to end door-to-door sales, surveys, and solicitations. Let's eliminate the threat. Take the poll below, and feel free to leave a comment.
