Users of iPhones typically aren't looking for the cheapest route, however, finding the cheapest way to enjoy the updated version of  iPhone 6 may open up the latest technology to more cell phone users.

Choosing a cell phone plan these says is about as complicated - and only slightly less enjoyable than buying a used car, or stabbing yourself in the neck with a sharp needle. But Wallethub has crunched the numbers to help guide us along the way to iPhone 6.

Here's what they found.

  • Sprint's Lease Plan is the cheapest overall option for both families and individuals, with T-Mobile's Lease Plan coming in second in each case.
  • A phone on the AT&T network purchased with Apple's Installment Plan is the most expensive for individuals. A two-year contract with AT&T is the most expensive option for families.
  • The best way to save on your cell phone bill is to keep a single device for more than two years. Paying only for service will result in savings up to 30% during the third year of your phone’s life.
  • Family plans are a great value across carriers, providing four lines and four-times as much data as individual plans for approximately double the price.

Wallet Hub's Cell Phone Savings Calculator can help you do some cost comparison of your own to fit your individual situation. The calculator allows you to enter your upfront and monthly costs to compare the actual cost of two-year contracts, installment plans, and no contract plans from major carriers.
