When stopped by police, drivers have all sorts of reasons to explain their actions. Here are the most common excuses law enforcement hear on a regular basis.

The 'Ticket Masters List' compiled by Insurance.com says in a general sense, pleading ignorance is the most often used excuse.

Specifically, these are the ten most famous excuses used by drivers when pulled over.

  1. Couldn't see the sign telling them not to do it.
  2. Lost or unfamiliar with the roads.
  3. Didn't know it was broken. (headlight, window, etc.)
  4. Everyone else was doing it.
  5. Having an emergency situation in my car. (spilled food or drink on them)
  6. Missed the turn or exit.
  7. Need to go to the bathroom.
  8. Claim they didn't do anything dangerous.
  9. On their way to an emergency to take care of someone ill or injured.
  10. GPS told them to do it.

If you're being pulled over by police, Maki Insurance recommends signaling your intention, then get off the road safely. Turn on your emergency flashers. Turn off the radio. Stay inside the car and stay off the phone. Place your hands on the steering wheel as the officer approaches.

Finally, tell the truth. The police have already heard all the excuses and can finish your sentence before you do.
