Let’s Spin a Web of ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’ Secrets

You know Spider-Man, and you’ve probably seen his big return to the Marvel Cinematic UniverseSpider-Man: Homecoming. But did you know the movie is littered with references to older films? Director Jon Watts was particularly inspired by John Hughes movies of the 1980s; the chase through the suburbs was a direct homage to a similar scene in Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. That’s just one of the web-slinging facts featured in the latest installment of You Think You Know Movies!

There are some cool Spidey Easter eggs in Homecoming too. In the Staten Island Ferry scene, a car has the license plate “SM2 0563.” That refers to Amazing Spider-Man #2, which came out in May of 1963, and featured the first appearance of the film’s villain, the Vulture. Aunt May’s car has a fun license plate too: “AMF-1562.” That’s a reference to Amazing Fantasy #15 from 1962, the first appearance of Spider-Man (and Aunt May). There are MCU Easter eggs too; the voice of Spidey’s personal JARVIS-style computer assistant is portrayed by Jennifer Connelly, the real-life wife of Paul Bettany, who plays the voice of … JARVIS.
