Sonny and Cher's string of hits in the 1960s ranged from "Laugh at Me", " Baby Don't Go", "Just You",  "But You're Mine", and "The Beat Goes On". But none was bigger than their very first hit " I Got You Babe" which went all the way to the top of the charts and spent 3 weeks at #1. The song was written by Sonny late at night in the basement of the couple's home.

Sonny and Chery  had their own variety show from 1971 until 1974, managing a couple more top ten hits "All I Ever Need Is You", and "A Cowboy's Work Is Never Done".

The show ended in 1974 and so did their marriage. By all accounts it was a bitter divorce.
But times heals all wounds, and on November 14, 1987 the couple appeared together on  Late Night  With David Letterman. Although the love was  gone, the smiles returned as they performed an apparently unrehearsed rendition of "I Got You Babe."
