On this day in rock history, compact disc production began in the U.S. when CBS opened a plant in Terre Haute, Ind. Perhaps fittingly, the first CD off the production line was Bruce Springsteen's Born in the U.S.A.

Cheap Trick followed up the success of At Budokan with Dream Police. Oddly, the record was recorded and set to be released in 1978, but the surprising success of the live album caused their label to push it back a year. Thanks to a pair of Top 40 singles in "Voices" and the title track, it became their highest-charting studio album, peaking at No. 6.

And we also wish a very happy birthday to former Eagles guitarist Don Felder. The writer of the music to "Hotel California," who joined the Eagles in 1974 and was fired in 2001, was born in 1947.
