Did you happen to see a huge plume of smoke early Saturday afternoon on Orchard Mesa? What caused it?

The smoke was the result of a semi catching fire near the intersection of 27 Road and Highway 50 on Orchard Mesa. Shortly after 2:00 Saturday afternoon, firefighters responded to the fire, putting it out in a matter of minutes.

The irony of the situation? This fire occurred right next door to the now-defunct fire station on Orchard Mesa. It seems the truck was parked in the lot when the fire began. There have been no reports of injury in the incident.

A few looky-loos, including myself, set up shop across the street near the Thunder Mountain Tavern. Kudos to the Grand Junction Fire Department for a rapid response. From the time I first saw the smoke to the time I arrived on the scene was not more than four minutes. By the time I arrived, the firefighters already had the flames extinguished and the situation under control.
