Another year has gone by for James Paul McCartney, celebrating his 72nd birthday today (June 18) and we celebrate by remembering one of his earliest compositions. It's been said that Paul McCartney has written or co-written over 600 songs. When I'm 64 was one of the first songs Paul ever wrote --at the tender age of 16.The Beatles recorded it in 1966 for the Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band album.

The song is unique on many levels from the lyrics to the instrumentation using clarinets predominately. It is not very rock n' rolll-like, but one of the "fun" Beatles tunes that gave us a bit of a change of pace from the norm. Although never released as a single, When I'm 64 has remained a popular Beatles tune, particularly from the time that McCartney actually turned 64.
