The weatherman just upgraded the forecast to include rain tomorrow and rain mixed with snow on Thursday. What better time to take a hike!

Are you stuck in the house with the blues on account of the rain? Why? This is the perfect time to hit the Riverfront Trail. Okay, so I'm weird. Everybody gets that. Nevertheless, please hear me out.

Regardless of the weather, you should definitely get out and enjoy Western Colorado trails this week. Several benefits come with rainy conditions. It was during a rain like this that I first caught a good glimpse of the Horned Owls on the Audubon Trail. That's one example. Here are five more which come to mind:

  1. Cooler temperatures.
  2. You can get in longer walks.
  3. You'll see wildlife which would typically remain hidden during normal conditions.
  4. With the thirsty ground, we have around here, rain doesn't always equal mud. Trails on Little Park soak up water like a sponge.
  5. You won’t have to clean your shoes.

(Sorry for the shaky camera. I was having a hard time that day.)

Rain brings about visuals you won't experience any other time. Check out this awesome rainbow spotted from the ranger's station near Connected Lakes.

A similar rainfall about a year-and-a-half ago resulted in an awesome walk on the Audubon Trail.

We don't exactly get a tremendous amount of rain here in Western Colorado. When we do get it, barring the occasional flash flood, it can be a real treat. A scorching summer lays in store; you know it's coming. Take advantage of a pleasant, rainy weekend. Make sure you get out and enjoy.
