The Colorado Mesa University football Mavericks wrap up the season Saturday in Alamosa against the Adams State Grizzlies.

The Mavericks under first year head coach Russ Martin, have had an up and down season, filled with injuries, and adjustments to a new coaching staff. As one might expect there were games that could have been won, and maybe some that should have been won. Too many turnovers, too many penalties, and sometimes just too many injuries. Most of the time when watching the Mavericks play it doesn’t look like a team that is going to finish below .500 for the fourth consecutive year. They have played hard, they have generally been competitive, and they have made great strides toward being a winning football team. There is great optimism going forward. Unless you have actually seen these guys play, you might not see it. But, this is a huge first step toward the return of winning Mavericks football.

Getting to five wins this season is certainly possible. The Mavericks and the Grizzlies typically play close games that could go either way. But the Mavericks haven’t won in Alamosa since 2003. And Adams State is having a very good year., with just 3 losses to the top 3 teams in the conference CSU Pueblo, New Mexico Highlands, and Chadron State.

It would be nice to take a win into the off-season. But, regardless of the outcome of Saturday’s match up, there will be a solid group of returning players going into next season that give Mavericks fans good reason to cheer and hope.
