A Critical Incident Team (CIT) has been established to investigate an officer involved shooting that occurred in the 100 block of Hollyberry, in Fruita just before 1 am Saturday.

According to the AP Police say a man killed in a shooting involving Fruita police officers had fled after being pulled over on the highway, then emerged from a home pointing a gun at three officers and they opened fire. Coroner's officials said yesterday that 61-year-old Lewis Pollard had multiple gunshot wounds.

Update June 17 12:30pm

As of this afternoon they have identified the victim in the shooting. The victim was 61 year old 61-year-old Lewis Pollard. He was a resident of Fruita. The Coroner says he died of multiple gunshot wounds.

Mesa County Sheriff's spokeswoman Heather Benjamin reported that three officers stopped a man for a traffic violation at about 12:40 am yesterday.

Benjamin says the man was fired upon after he fled on foot and because the Fruita Police Officers thought he was armed. One adult male is deceased and no officers are injured.

According to Benjamin it is standard for a CIT to be established to investigate all officer involved shootings and is made up of area agencies including Mesa County Sheriff's Office, Grand Junction Police Department, Fruita Police Department and Colorado Bureau of Investigation.

It's unclear how many of the three officers fired their weapons or how many times the man was shot.
