A man has been arrested after allegedly firing a gun out of the window of a vehicle while traveling on I-70 through Glenwood Canyon.

The Colorado State Patrol (CSP) reports on Monday, September 24 at approximately 12:54 p.m. they, along with the Eagle County Sheriff's Office, responded to a report of a person firing a gun from a moving vehicle traveling east on Interstate 70 in Glenwood Canyon.

Witnesses reported seeing a passenger in a Ford Expedition with Utah license plates point a gun out of the window and fire into the air between Glenwood Springs and the No Name exit on I-70.

Colorado State Patrol Troopers intercepted the vehicle near Gypsum and stopped the vehicle just west of Eagle. Both east and westbound lanes of I-70 were closed during the stop due to safety concerns. The interstate was reopened after troopers detained the people who were in the SUV.

After speaking with each occupant of the vehicle, troopers seized a .22 caliber handgun and arrested 43-year-old Ryan Johnson of Fairview, Utah for Prohibited Use of a Weapon and Reckless Endangerment.

CSP troopers believe Johnson was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the arrest and consider that to be a contributing factor to the incident. There were no reported injuries as a result of the shot fired.
