This video of a crew trying to load cars onto a ferry in rough seas proves timing is everything.

One miscalculation and part of the car makes it onto the boat while the rest is left on the dock. I guess you could retrieve those pieces on the return trip.

The mats between the dock and ferry serve two purposes. The first is to fool the driver into thinking there's a ramp between the boat and the dock. The second is to make it a lot easier to collect the car parts ripped off during a less than perfect entry.
