It seems a couple of intrepid ski bums decided to take to the slopes a bit early this year. Way early. Not only did they pick the wrong season to try and downhill ski, it seems they also picked the wrong location. Western Colorado's Little Park Road is a bit rocky, not to mention a little short in the snow department. Why, then, did they pack their skis all the way down this steep and challenging trail?

It seems there can be three strong possibilities which might answer this question:

  1. Someone was anxious to develop a new sport, "Rock Skiing."
  2. Impatient skiers on a budget couldn't wait until Winter and were unwilling to pay expensive lift ticket fees.
  3. Someone stole property, and then discarded it on a Western Colorado trail.

Why would someone carry skis all the way down here only to discard them? Certainly they weren't skiing. It's rocky, not to mention early in the Fall. It hasn't snowed on little park in over 6 months.

Could it be that someone stole these items, and then discarded them here in hopes they would not be found out? There has to be an easier way.

My money is on option #3. My guess is these skis are stolen, and were discarded here for the simple purpose of being a pain. In my 44 years of walking trails on Little Park Road, I have encountered several strange happenings, including:

  • A brand new car which had been stolen from a local lot and pushed into the canyon.
  • A truck which had been abandoned after it overturned during an ambitious hill climb.
  • A man who had drank himself to death and died in his car (right next to where Gunny Loop sets out.)
  • and many, many more!

In the event I'm correct about option #3, let me assure you, I've contacted the Sheriff's Department.
