If You Go to Chadron, Nebraska You Have to Eat at Wrecker’s Roadhouse

Traveling around the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference for Colorado Mesa University Athletics, I often times have the opportunity to dine at a local hot spot. Greg Reed, my football broadcast partner, and I will try and find a local restaurant that we know nothing about, and give it a try. This past weekend we were in Chadron, Nebraska and had a great experience at Wrecker's Roadhouse.

Now, keep in mind,  though Chadron is  home to Chadron State College, it is a small town of about 6,000 people. There's not a lot to choose from when it comes to dining. We considered Helen's Pancake and Steakhouse but once we drove past Wreckers on Main Street we made our decision.

Wrecker's is in a large, old building, decorated with antiques, signs,  and stuffed animals - the dead kind. Though the ceiling was high, it felt cozy.

The sign on the front says, 'Best Chicken Fried Steak Anywhere.' I happen to be a sucker for chicken fried steak, so I decided to take them up on their challenge.

They steak if offered petite size, or large, and I opted for the petite, and it came with chunky mashed potatoes covered in gravy and green beans. It was good. Real good. I couldn't think of when I had experienced a better chicken fried steak, so for now at least, the sign out front rings true.

Other offerings on the menu included a variety of burgers and sandwiches, steaks, and appetizers, and a full array of beverages.

We arrived at Wrecker's shortly after it opened at 4pm. It filled up quickly with cowboys and cowgirls in boots and spurs, just finishing up the day's local rodeo. The staff  was very attentive and friendly, and made us feel right at home.

What are others saying about Wrecker's Roadhouse? Rick, from Oceanside, California says "Great food, atmosphere and our server was AMAZING. If you're ever in Chadron, this place is a gem."  Paul, from Phoenix, Arizona says, "I have to say I was completely shocked and blown away with the quality of the food here.Overall, Wrecker's Roadhouse nailed it and I wish they were in my hometown. I'll be sure to eat at Wrecker's every time I find myself in Chadron!"

I don't get to Chadron, Nebraska very often, but I'm pretty sure the next time I'm passing through I'm making a stop at Wreckers. Until then, I will remember it fondly with my souvenir Wrecker's pen.
