The end of the world, according the Mayans, is December 21, 2012 which is just 80 days away from today (October 1, 2012). If you make it past that you can catch a glimpse of a comet which will be 10 times brighter than the moon.

The comet, C/2012 S1, is a comet that has probably never come through our inner system, plus it's and highly reflective thanks to all of the ice on it. The comet is so big you won't need anything except for your eyes to view it. It was discovered just days ago on September 21, 2012. C/2012 S1 is expected to be closest to the sun on November 28, 2013. On a scale of brightness magnitude it is estimated to be a -16, the sun is a -26 and the Hale-Bopp Comet was just a -1 when it came through in 1997. The Hale-Bopp Comet caused the Heaven's Gate cult to commit suicide.

Astronomers say comet C2012 S1 should be easy to find without any aid. It will most likely have a huge glowing tail as it gets close to the sun and the ice melts off. Astronomers can't guarantee the brightness but expect it to be visible with just your eyes, even if their estimates are off.
