A Grand Junction home at 15th and Elm was completely engulfed in flames last night, June 25. This dwelling was a known as a party house for 'Mesa College' students as far back as the 1970s.

I certainly mean no disrespect to the three occupants who lived at this house at the time of the fire. Their home has been destroyed. Fortunately, no one was injured.

The video above was shot at approximately 10 p.m. Sunday night. At that time, police had closed a one-block perimeter around the fire.

Looking at the history of the house, many a CMU, Mesa State College, Mesa College, and even Mesa Junior College student called this location their home. At 107 years old, the house has seen many an occupant.

In the past, I owned a handful of properties on this block. Upon hearing about a fire on 15th Street around Elm, I chose to swing by to see if it might be one of my former properties. As it turns out, it was not. Over the years, however, I've known more than a few occupants from this address.

The house destroyed was located on the northwest corner of 15th and Elm. In my mind, the house, a two-story Victorian, had always been something of a landmark.

The house is located exactly three blocks east of the student center at Colorado Mesa University. The location was always perfect for college students. At three blocks, the house was closer to campus than most parking.

Looking at Facebook, you'll find several people commenting on their memories of the structure. Students as far back as the 1960s, and as recent as 2006, have fond memories of the home.

It was the house in the 70s where a lot of us from the band "The Backwash Boys" (later to become Ralph Dinosaur) lived and practiced. We were all in college at Mesa at the time. - Pete Langford
