Every parent wants their kid to have a good time during Halloween, but it can be a scary time for parents, here's a few tips to ensure your kids are SAFE as well!

The Grand Junction Fire Department sent these tips out so parents can help their kids have a fun, safe and memorable Halloween!

Costume Selection - You'd think this would be obvious but:

  • Should be fire safe
  • Allow free movement but should not have parts that trail or drag and could catch fire.
  • Masks should provide clear vision from the front, sides and bottom.
  • All props such as fake knives, swords or guns should be made from cardboard or flexible materials to prevent accidental injury and avoid being mistaken for the real thing.

GJFD also recommends taking pictures of your trick-or-treaters so that they can be easily identified by emergency personnel if necessary.

Rules for the Street

  • Determine a route and accompany your trick-or-treaters.
  • Carry a flashlight or glow stick,
  • Cross streets only at intersections and designated crosswalks and avoid major intersections if possible.
  • If you're driving your kids from place to place drive SLOWER than the posted speed limit, be on the alert for children crossing the street, and activate your hazards

Back home and safe

  • Remember treats should not be eaten until an adult has checked them.
  • Pay special attention to homemade treats; don’t let children eat these unless you know and trust the source.

Discuss anything that troubled your kids during their night out and call any suspicious activities into 911 (for emergencies) or 242-6707 (for non-emergencies).
