Mesa County has risen the alert level for the West Salt Creek Landslide area near Collbran, Colo.

Increased activity from spring runoff caused the pond at the top of the landslide to release water. As a result, Mesa County raised the alert level to Response Level Two. Residents in the area should be prepared to evacuate.

  • Road and bridge equipment is being staged in Collbran.
  • Thousands of sandbags are prepared in case of flooding.
  • Initial reports of erosion on Salt Creek Road.
  • Officials are encouraging everyone -- including media -- to stay out of the area.

Residents need to be prepared to leave the area. Authorities encourage resident to have an emergency kit prepared, emergency family plan and register their cell phone to receive community and emergency alerts from 911.

Area residents should also familiarize themselves with these evacuation routes based on where they live.

  • Salt Creek Area: East on Hwy 330 to Clover Lane
    • Meet at the cemetery for evacuation assistance if necessary.
    • May self-evacuate on Hwy 330 E to Silt.
  • 57 ½ Rd south then west through Molina to Mesa Community Center.
    • Evacuation assistance will be organized at Mesa Community Center.
  • Kimball Creek Rd north to 58 7/10 Rd east.
    • Park along right shoulder leaving one lane clear for traffic.
    • Wait for the water to recede or standby for evacuation direction if required.
