This Friday (June 5) The Grand Junction Salvation Army and The VA Medical Center are hosting a National Doughnut Day Celebration and community thank you to our veterans event.

The event  will give people a chance to offer their thanks and spend time with veterans over coffee and doughnuts.

The Doughnut Day and Veterans appreciation event runs from 9 a.m. until noon at the main entrance to the VA Medical Center on North Avenue. The public is is encouraged to attend this free event.

The Salvation Army is known to have served doughnuts to US soldiers both at home and abroad during World War I. The Salvation Army volunteers who worked in the huts supplying doughnuts (donuts) and other goods got the nicknames 'doughnut dollies' or 'doughnut lassies.'

The first National Doughnut Day occurred on June 7, 1938 when a military doctor named Morgan Pett bought doughnuts for wounded soldiers he was preparing to visit and treat on a military base.

National Doughnut Day is now celebrated on the first Friday of June and is celebrated by many as a day to thank both the military and the Salvation Army for the work each has done to protect our country and assist those in need.
