It's not a stop sign, or a yield sign, nor does it look like one, but this one sign seems to confuse a lot of Grand Junction drivers.

The sign is at the intersection of I-70B and 30 Road and is intended for eastbound I-70B drivers turning right onto 30 Road.

At first glance, it appears to be a merge sign, but upon closer look, it actually does not indicate a merge situation, but rather two distinct lanes of traffic. Yet, time and time again, drivers turning right onto 30 Road feel compelled to stop until all the cross traffic has gone past.

A familiar sound at the intersection is the horn-honking of impatient motorists who know what the sign means and feel compelled to send a gentle message to confused motorists who think they need to stop and wait for traffic.

Despite the sign, what many motorists fail to recognize is that there is only one lane of traffic on 30 Road crossing north over I-70B. For those who are turning onto 30 Road, they can get on around the corner in their own lane, and then have a decent distance to go before needing to get into the left lane or make a right turn at the next stop light.

I know that many people are confused by this, because I see them every day on my way home from work. They are sitting there stopped -- and waiting -- for something though I don't know what.

So the next time you need to make a right turn onto 30 Road off I-70B, remember, that is not a stop, yield, or merge sign. Feel free to safely make your turn and keep traffic flowing.
