Today (July 15) is National Gummi Worm Day, so go out and eat some worms. This day is doubly significant because it also marks the anniversary of the worms' cousin, the gummi bear.

Gummi (gummy) bears originated in Germany in 1920 and are also known as rubber bears or little rubber bears.

Gummi worms were first introduced on July 15, 1981 on the 60th anniversary of gummi bears. The average gummi worm is about 2 inches in length. The largest edible gummi worm is 26 inches long, weighs three pounds and packs an incredible 4,000 calories.

What makes gummi bears and worms so gummy? The simple answer is gelatin, but this video really explains exactly how those delicious gummy treats are made.
