Summer is here, it's hot, and we are all looking for a way to cool off and have some fun at the same time. The river is appealing, but Grand Junction Parks and Rec is advising residents to stay out of the river right now.

A number of people have already died this year on Colorado rivers. In its weekly message to residents, Grand Junction Parks, and Rec notes these weren't all inexperienced and/or drunk, careless people. In most cases, there were safety precautions, helmets, and life jackets involved - and they may have been capable swimmers. But, the fact is, it doesn't matter. The river doesn't care who you are, or how prepared you are. It can be extremely vicious and unforgiving.

The message talks about the current speed of the river, as it sweeps mud and debris quickly downstream, with rocks, logjams, and other structures under the water obscured by high water. It's a dangerous combination, and the city's email says "there is not a moving body of water in the state right now that is safe. For anyone."

If you don't believe it, check out this video taken recently in Glenwood Canyon. In one segment, you see the raging, rushing rapids of the river, and in another segment, calmer waters that obviously are extremely high - and dangerous.

If you want to have some fun in the water, the safest best is going to be to wait a while longer before trying the river. And, take the GJ Parks and Rec advice and head to the swimming pool instead.
