Just in case you don't have a lawn mower, here are four ridiculous, yet effective, ways to cut your grass without a lawn mower.

Most people use a lawn mower to cut their grass, but I'm here to tell you it's not the only way to do it. I know this to be true, based on my own experience.

My backyard is small - and ever since my lawn mower bit the dust a few years ago, I have resorted to using other means for cutting the grass. Here at the end of the season, I wanted to give the lawn one final trim before the snow flies, and in the process, I discovered two new ways to get the job done without a lawn mower.

I supposed I should clarify I don't actually have a lawn in my backyard. The dogs pretty much took care of that. What I have are patches of grass here and there - with lots of dirt in between. But, it's enough that it does need to be cut, and so I do whatever it takes to get the job done.

So, here are four ridiculous ways to cut your grass - when you don't have a lawn mower.

    WEED WHACKER

If you don't have a lawn mower, the next best option may be a weed whacker, weed eater, lawn trimmer - whatever you want to call it.This has been a fairly reliable method for me the last few years, but this year I was unable to locate the appropriate spool of string to fit my particular model --and so it forced me to be a little creative.

    HEDGE TRIMMER

This was a brand new one for me, but it actually worked. I had just trimmed the front shrubs and the thought suddenly occurred to me that it might work on the grass. Worked like a charm -- until I sliced the extension cord in half and still had about a third of the grass to cut.

    HEDGE SHEERS

The nice thing about hedge sheers is no electrical power is required. All you need is the ability to bend over - a lot. I wouldn't  want to do an entire lawn this way, but, in a pinch it got the job done - and I think I'm done with grass cutting for the season.

    GOLF CLUBS

Nobody should be surprised that I would find a way to get a golf club involved in my yard work. I have a couple of beater clubs I use to take practice swings in the backyard. Taking practice swings with divots allows me to whack the grass off at the knees, accomplishing two things. I get to practice golf and at the same time get the lawn chopped down. The problem here is that it's not a very fast way to get the job done - but it can be done.
