Five Christmas Gifts You Should Never Give a Co-worker
While most of us are all a-fuss about what to buy for the friends and family members on our list, here is a look at some things you shouldn't be buying for co-workers.
I'm guessing that most of us don't buy gifts for co-workers -- unless you are involved in a situation where you've drawn names and you have to get a gift for one of your colleagues. Figuring out what to buy for what may be a casual acquaintance can be a challenge. A gift card is usually a good idea, but not just any gift card.
From WallStCheatSheet, here are five Christmas gifts you should never buy for a co-worker.
LINGERIE
This seems pretty obvious, but this also includes no gift cards to Victoria's Secret or any other place that may be inappropriate for this situation. Restaurant gifts cards would be a much better option.
SELF-HELP BOOK
This is a bad idea, especially if it's about work or how they can do their job better. They may take it personally, and then your work relationship gets really weird and awkward.
SOMETHING USED
Of course, if it's a White Elephant gift exchange a used gift is perfectly acceptable. This seems to be a matter of common sense, but maybe not to everyone. It is okay to re-gift something -- as long as it is still in it's original packaging.
PERFUME or COLOGNE
There are a couple of problems with this. Number one, it could imply the person smells bad - and maybe they do. But this is just another way to make your relationship really awkward. Secondly, people who wear a fragrance are generally pretty particular about what that fragrance is. This just potentially puts them in the awkward position of wearing something they might think smells like a cow barn.
MARIJUANA
Anything marijuana related is a bad idea. Just because you can "do it" in Colorado and you know your co-worker does it, doesn't mean it's a good gift. The whole marijuana thing is still a hot-button item, a lot of people aren't comfortable with it, and even though it's legal, it could still get you fired. It's just not a good thing to bring to a holiday office party.
