We've all had those days where we're pretty lethargic and are looking for an energy boost. But, does an energy drink really give you the boost you need?

This test, although not entirely scientific, seems to indicate, yes. But, when you look at the difference in performance both short and long term, the early 'boost' in a couple of these drinks is followed by just the opposite.

The answer is, if you need an occasional short term lift, an energy drink will probably help. But, if you're drinking one every day, then consider these healthier and more long lasting natural energy boosters.

  • Green Juices and Smoothies - They're packed with the vitamins to give you energy all day. Actually, a well balanced overall diet will help your metabolism operate at peak efficiency.
  • Green Tea - While it contains a small amount of caffeine, drinking green tea gives you a mental boost without the caffeine crash of an energy drink or coffee.
  • Protein Shakes - If you're feeling sluggish, it could be a lack of protein. If you mix up a drink with protein in it, make sure to add fruit, yogurt or some other carbohydrate to help the protein convert to usable energy.
  • Water - The control of the energy drink test was water. Dehydration can cause fatigue, so drinking plenty of water along with the other healthier alternatives can keep you energized all day.

So, next time you're reaching for that energy drink, think about why you're feeling like you're moving in slow motion and work on 'powering up' for the day instead of just the moment.
