The problem of hunger in Grand Junction is quite evident, but Catholic Outreach is doing what it can to feed the hungry through Empty Bowls.

The 21st Annual Empty Bowls Luncheon on October 8 will help raise funds for the Catholic Outreach Soup Kitchen - which serves a noon meal to between 250 and 300 hungry people.

Sometimes I wonder how many of Grand Junction's street-walkers and sign-holders are aware of the daily meal and the other services provided by Catholic Outreach. Next time you see one, you might want to mention it to them.

Empty Bowls is a unique event in which attendees enjoy a delicious lunch -- but then they get to keep the bowl. The pottery bowls are made by area potters, as well as students from Palisade, Fruita Monument, and Grand Junction High School as well as Colorado Mesa University.

For $25, you can enjoy a bowl of delicious soup, donated by a Grand Junction restaurant, along with bread, a beverage, and dessert. But, then, you keep the hand- crafted pottery bowl. Plus, you can enjoy live music including the Evergreen String Quartet.

The Empty Bowls luncheon will be held October 8 from 11:00AM-1:30PM at the Soup Kitchen, located at 245 S. First Street in Grand Junction.Tickets are available at Grand Valley Catholic Outreach, participating City Market stores, and at many local churches.
