An East Middle School student was injured on her way to school this morning (April 12) when her bicycle collided with a car.

According to the Grand Junction Police Department, the 12-year-old bicyclist hit the car after running the stop sign at the intersection of 24th Street and Gunnison Avenue.

The girl was taken to the hospital with minor injuries. Police say she was not wearing a helmet, telling officers she didn't own one. The driver of the car was not injured.

According to our news partner KKCO 11 News, the girl could have been ticketed, but as of this afternoon she had not received a citation.

A Grand Junction Police Officer purchased the girl a helmet and other officers were collecting money to replace the girl's bicycle which was damaged in the collision.
