It is something to consider. Aliens could travel to Earth with the intent of making contact with a species other than humans. That idea never really occurred to most people until 28 years ago today. As it turns out, the fate of the Earth rested with a pair of Humpback Whales named George and Gracie. It was on this date in 1986, theater goers watched this unfold with the hugely successful movie, "Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home."

The premise was incredible; an alien race sends a probe to Earth to find out why they've lost contact with the species Humpback Whale. Upon contact with the probe, even the crew of the Enterprise had yet to consider the possibility the probe wished contact with something other than humans. What unfolded next was a compelling time-travel story which would go on to become one of the most popular films of the franchise.

The film was well received by audiences and critics alike. Some fans, including myself, felt the humor was somewhat forced, but ultimately enjoyable after the very dark Star Trek III: The Search For Spock.

Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home was the top grossing film for that weekend's box office, and went on to gross $133 million worldwide.
