We've always been told that dogs cannot distinguish pitch and rhythm in music. The dog "Bailey" not only disproves the theory, but actually goes on to prove that dogs can truly enjoy music.

This video received over 3 million hits within a week of being posted on Youtube. Bailey's appreciation of music does raise some interesting questions:

  • Do dogs have a sense of rhythm?
  • Can dogs distinguish variations in pitch? Bats can, so maybe dogs can too.
  • Is Bailey the one drinking that Budweiser, and is there any left?

To answer some of these questions, we turn to scientists who study the matter. According Gareth Mitchell's article in the magazine "Focus," some animals have an innate sense of rhythm or can acquire one through practice.
