Colossal Display Delights LEGO and University of Colorado Enthusiasts

If you had between 500,000 and 1,000,000 LEGO pieces, what would you build? A group of fanatics took their bricks to CU Boulder and built a colossal replica of the university campus.

This seemingly insane idea goes back to 2012 when Allyson Smith, director of University of Colorado CU Heritage Center, saw a LEGO display at the History of Colorado Center in Denver titled LEGO-rado.

That display sparked an idea that in 2014 resulted in the CU Hit the Bricks exhibition. The model of various parts of the campus was constructed by the Colorado/Wyoming LEGO Users Group and a bunch of volunteers. Over the last few years there have also been some expansions to the exhibit.

As impressive as the display is, the work involved in building it, as this time-lapse video shows, is equally if not more impressive.

The exhibit also has what is described as a number of whimsical elements, some reflecting real things or events at CU, others fictional that are there simply for the amusement of people visiting the display.

The University of Colorado CU Heritage Center is located at 1600 Pleasant Street on the university campus.  Hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday except for university holidays. Admission is free. Call 303-492-6329 to check for any special closures or hours before making the trip.
