There are plenty of families who would love to add a furry friend to their family. Scammers know that and play on your emotions at the expense of common sense and your money.

The Mesa County Sheriff's Office has received a significant number of reports from people who picked out a puppy online, sent hundreds of dollars to the so-called breeder, and never got the pup.

The scams are targeting people looking for specific breeds and often quote a price and then start adding in additional fees for adoption, transportation, and insurance.

The Mesa County Sheriff's Office cautions people from buying animals online from an out of state seller. If you really want a specific breed, start with the American Kennel Club who can give you a list of reputable breeders in your area.

Another option is to adopt from a shelter. Sure, it may not be exactly the breed you want, but once you meet the cute little pups face-to-face, you'll probably fall in love with at least one that will give you many years of love and happiness.

Here are some great places to find your next four-legged friend. Roice-Hurst Humane Society, Mesa County Animal Control, Delta Animal Shelter, Montrose Animal Control.
