One of the amazing things about the human body is it burns calories even while you're sleeping. Here's how to determine how many calories you can burn while in bed.

According to Dr. Halls, the average person weighing 150 pounds will burn an average of 63 calories per hour while sleeping.

Halls says calories burned while sleeping are used to maintain essential functions of the body including pumping blood, regulating temperature and repairing cells.

To find the number of calories you burn while sleeping, you need to know two things, how much you weigh and how many hours you sleep.

Dr. Hall's sleep calorie burning formula is simple. The average person burns an average of 0.42 calories per pound every hour they're asleep. Simply multiply your weight by 0.42 to figure out the number of calories burned in an hour's sleep.

Multiply the number of calories burned per hour by the number of hours spent sleeping and you'll have a good average of the number of calories burned while asleep.

To maximize calorie burning during sleep, the doctor recommends a regular sleep routine, going to bed and waking at about the same time every day.

Dr, Halls also discourages the use of the snooze alarm that can interrupt REM sleep which is essential to maximize calorie burning. So, set the alarm at the time you need to wake up and get up. Not only will you burn more calories, but you'll be less lethargic in the morning.
