A news release out Wednesday is once again marking national attention for the Colorado Mesa University’s women’s basketball team, and this time, it’s for something outside the basketball court.

CMU’s women’s basketball team is being recognized for their work in the classroom. The Lady Mavericks finished the 2012-2013 season ranked 8TH academically in the NCAA with a 3.525 Team GPA.

Coach Taylor Wagner showed pride in his team when asked for comments on the national ranking. “What a tribute to our team to finish ranked 8th academically and make it to the Elite 8 in the same year. It was a special group of student athletes this year. We talked early in the fall last year about being the best on the court and in the classroom and they produced this year.”

The Lady Mavericks will open their RMAC and NCAA South Central Region title defense in November at the Southwestern Oklahoma Classic.
