March Madness has already begun – at least for Division II schools in the NCAA.

Colorado Mesa University’s women’s basketball team traveled this week to Canyon, Texas to compete in the South Central Regional Tournament, with the tournament winner advancing to NCAA Elite 8 Tournament.

The Lady Mavericks will be one of two teams from the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference competing in the South Central Regional Tournament. The other team is Colorado State-Pueblo.

The South Central Regional Tournament tips off Friday morning on the campus of West Texas A&M.

Friday’s schedule is as follows (all times are Grand Junction times):

  • 11:00 a.m. – #3 Tarleton State vs. #6 Texas A&M Int’l
  • 1:30 p.m. – #2 Colorado Mesa vs. #7 Midwestern State (ESPN Radio 1230 will broadcast the Mavericks game beginning at 1:15 p.m.)
  • 4:00 p.m. – #1 West Texas A&M vs. #8 St. Edward’s
  • 6:30 p.m. – #4 Colorado State-Pueblo vs. #5 St. Mary’s

Friday’s winners will advance to the semifinals scheduled for 4:00 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. Saturday, and the championship game is set for 6:00 p.m. Monday.

The South Central Regional champion will advance to the NCAA Women’s Elite Eight, scheduled for March 25, 26 and 28 at Erie Insurance Arena in Erie, Pa.

All playoff games that the CMU Mavericks compete in will be broadcast on ESPN Radio 1230.
