The Colorado Mesa Mavericks looked to be headed for a loss in their opening game of the 2014 NCAA South Central Regional Tournament after going down 8-0  to New Mexico Highlands heading into the 7th inning. But, the Mavericks scored an unlikely win with an absolutely unbelievable comeback.

The Mavericks had been held in check for 6 innings, and along with committing 3 errors in the third inning, found themselves in a desperate situation trailing 8-0 heading into the bottom of the 7th inning.

Junior Derrick Garcia was the hero of this one, drilling a 2-run homer to left field in the 7th to get the Mavs on the board and trailing 8-2 going into the 8th inning. CMU would push 6 runs across in the 8th inning to tie the score at 8-8.

In the top of the 9th inning, with two out and two on for the Cowboys,  Garcia, the Mavs second basemen dove for a line drive up the middle that was heading for center field, sure to bring in the go ahead run. Garcia snagged the ball, flipped it to Nate Robertson covering second to end the inning and send the game into the bottom of the 9th inning.

Austin Kaiser, the RMAC Player of the Year started the rally with a one out double. It looked like a lazy pop fly behind second base in shallow center fielder, but the outfielder ran into the umpire and couldn't make the catch. Nate Robertson followed with an infield hit, and Roman Chavez was intentionally walked to load the bases with one out. Bring on the five-foot eight, 165 pound Derrick Garcia, who laced an 0-2 pitch to right field to drive in the winning run.

With the dramatic 9-8 come-from-behind win, the Mavericks will next play in Friday's 3:30 game against St. Edwards and will definitely play on a game on Saturday regardless of the outcome.
