The Colorado Mesa Mavericks head to Spearfish, South Dakota this week to face Black Hills State in the third conference game of the year.

The Mavericks hope to rebound from a disappointing loss to a good Chadron State team last Saturday at Stocker Stadium 24-13. The Mavericks were down by four in the 4th quarter, and scored a go-ahead touchdown, but the play was called back by a penalty, and the Mavericks were unable to get back to the end zone.

The Mavericks are 2-2 on the season, 1-1 in RMAC play, as are the Yellow Jackets. Black Hills State hammered Ft. Lewis 40-14, but lost last week to Colorado Mines 48-21.

Colorado Mesa will give freshman quarterback Andrew Cota his first start of the season this week, as Coach Russ Martin looks for some consistency in his offense, which has shown glimpses of explosiveness, but has been very inconsistent. Cota has been splitting time with sophomore, Aric Kaiser ,although Kaiser has taken the majority of snaps. Cota has completed 12 of 31 passes with 1 interception and one touchdown.

This week on the CMU Mavericks coaches show (12 noon, Wednesdays on ESPN 1230) Mavericks Head Coach Russ Martin said  his team will be facing a Black Hills State team with an exceptional quarterback.

Game time is 1:00 Saturday from Spearfish, where game time temperatures are expected to be in the 60s. Coverage begins at 12:30 on ESPN Radio 1230.
