The CMU Mavericks defeated Dixie State 44-37 in an overtime thriller Saturday night in front of more than 5000 fans at  Grand Junction's Stocker Stadium.

Dixie State must be wondering how in the world they did not win this football game, outgaining the Mavericks in total yardage 640 - 417. The Red Storm dominated the time of possession 34:56 to 25:04, and took a 37-34  lead with 42 seconds to play on a 25 yard field goal.

But, the Mavericks responded with an 8 play drive in 41 second drive, culminating in freshman Ryan Sheehan's third field goal of the game - a 40 yarder with just one second to play that tied the score and sent the game to overtime. Sheehan had missed two field goals earlier in the period.

In overtime, Grand Junction High School alum Jerreon Dennis scored from inside the one on a fourth down play to put the Mavs up by seven, and then Dustin Rivas came up with an interception in the end zone on Dixie State's overtime possession to seal the win.

The Mavericks were outgained in the game but forced five turnovers, while committing only one, and had 5 quarterback sacks, giving up none. Another telling stat was the Mavericks averaging 59 yards on 4 kickoff returns.

While the Mavericks got the season opening win, it could prove costly, with several starters leaving the game with potentially serious injuries, including running back Ricky Trinidad, and defensive players Cody Daniels from Fruita Monument High School, Carlos Aviles, and Tony White.
