CMU Baseball Mavericks Finish Incredible Season

It’s been a great season for the Colorado Mesa University baseball Mavericks, even though their season came to a disappointing end this past weekend with a 3-0 loss to Texas A & M Kingsville in an elimination game in the NCAA Regional Tournament.

The Mavericks won their opening game of the NCAA Regional 6-2 over St. Mary’s, and then lost a heart breaker to St. Edwards in extra innings, after leading by two runs in the ninth inning.

Still, it’s truly been a memorable and outstanding season. For starters, the Mavericks finished the season with a record of 45-11. The eleven losses in the season is the fewest since 1979, when the Mavericks went 28-11 under Byron Wiehe. The 45 wins is the third most wins in a season in the last 36 years.

The Mavericks won the RMAC Regular Season title for the 10th time in 15 years, and advanced to the NCAA Regional Tournament for the 11th time during that span.

Coach Chris Hanks, who wrapped up his 15th season with the Mavericks was named the RMAC Coach of the Year, and this past weekend notched his 600th career win at CMU.

There were a number of individual accomplishments as well. Sophomore Nate Robertson, out of Montrose High School, was named the RMAC Player of the Year, and senior Matt Williams, from Vero Beach, Florida, was selected as the RMAC Pitcher of the Year.

While the Mavericks are graduating a number of seniors off this squad, there are several players  who were regular starters or saw significant playing time that will be back to make up the core of next year’s team. That list includes Nate Robertson at shortstop, Kevin Mitchell and Jordan Moore-Liester at first base, catcher Colton Schoelkopk, outfielder Austin Kaiser, starting pitchers Kyle Davis and Joey Danner, and reliever Dakota Behr.
