Most schools and many businesses ban chewing gum, but a recent study indicates chewing gum may actually help people focus and concentrate better.

According to a study published in the British Journal of Psychology and reported in Scientific American, the study tested two groups of people, one group was allowed to chew gum, the other did not. The results of the study found,

(gum chewers) had higher accuracy rates and faster reaction times than the non-gum chewers. Those chewing gum also maintained focus longer.

Researchers believe chewing gum helps deliver more oxygen to the brain which in turn makes people stay alert, remember more and react more quickly. They also found pretending to chew gum didn't have the same results as really chewing gum.
