Paul McCartney is celebrating his 71st birthday today (June 18). As a salute to Sir Paul, here are some facts about the former Beatle you may not know.

  • Paul is in the Guinness Book of World Records with 60 gold records and over 100 million singles sold.
  • Paul has a record 29 number one singles on the U.S. charts with The Beatles, Paul McCartney & Wings, and as a solo artist, including a duet with Stevie Wonder.
  • Paul owns the copyrights to Buddy Holly's song catalog and also numerous other compositions.
  • His song "When I'm 64" was written for his father Jim's 64th birthday.
  • Paul owns and plays in studio sessions the double bass that once belonged to Elvis Presley's bassist Bill Black.
  • He was a bit of an amateur bird-watcher and owned a beloved bird field guide as a boy. It was later inspire him to write the song "Blackbird".
  • Paul married his current wife, Nancy Shevell, October 9, 2011 on what would have been John Lennon's 71st birthday.
  • He was the only ex-Beatle to appear on 'The Ed Sullivan Show' with his 1970 video of "Maybe I'm Amazed".
  • With his divorce from Heather Mills, he became the fourth and final member of The Beatles to get a divorce. Among the four, McCartney had the longest marriage, to Linda McCartney. Ringo Starr however, is still married to his second wife, Barbara Bach. They've been married since 1981.
