The face of Colorado Mesa University basketball is changing  with the announcement that Jim Heaps is stepping down as men's head basketball coach to assume the position of Assistant Athletic Director for Student Success. Heaps, who played high school basketball in Delta and then for the Mavericks has served as CMU head coach for 17 seasons.

Mavs End Season 31-2 With Loss In Elite 8

It was their first trip ever to the NCAA Elite 8, and it will be an experience the CMU Women's basketball team will remember for a lifetime. But it's a trip to San Antonio that ends in disappointment as the Mavericks fell to the Dowling College Golden Lions by a score of 60-44. The Mavericks ran into a very tough defensive squad and found nearly every shot to be challenged.

The scoreboard read CMU 69 ; MSU 65. It's the only numbers that matter, and the Colorado Mesa University Mavericks are headed to the NCAA Elite 8 for the first time in school history. Monday's South Central Regional Championship Game against Midwestern State, from Wichita Falls, Texas,  was clearly the toughest game the Mavericks played this season, and by no means was it their best game of the year.

The CMU women's basketball team were up against a formidable challenger in the South Central Regional Final, Monday (March 18), facing the Midwestern State University Mustangs. the Mavericks were down by eight at more than once during the first half but managed to tie the score 31-31 by halftime.

Mavs/Mustangs Regional Championship Preview

It has been a historic season for the Colorado  Mesa  University Mavericks. Most wins in school history, best winning percentage, the regular season RMAC title, the RMAC conference tournament championship, and two victories in the NCAA Regional Tournament, and now an appearance in the regional championship. The Mavericks are hoping that more history is made tonight at Brownson Arena when they host the Midwestern State Mustangs for the NCAA South Central Regional Championship. A win tonight would give the Mavericks their first ever regional championship in basketball.

Mavs Begin Play In NCAA Regional

It's been an amazing season for the Colorado Mesa  University women's basketball team. An RMAC regular season title, an RMAC Shootout Championship, and with a 28-1 record, the number one seed in the NCAA South Central Regional that begins today at Brownson Arena in Grand Junction. But as historic as this season has been, the Mavericks are hoping to play 6 more games. That's how many  more wins it will take to win a national championship.
