‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier’ Visual Effects Reel Highlights Some Incredible CGI
Having visited the set of a few Marvel movies, we can say that there are a lot of fully-constructed sets and practical effects in use on their big superhero movies. But, watching this new highlight reel from ILM on the making of ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier’ it’s pretty remarkable to see how they’re able to create full shots out of almost nothing.
‘The Winter Soldier’ is one of the 10 finalists for the Best Visual Effects category at this year’s Oscars and ILM has released this sizzle reel of their work on the film to promote their efforts for a nomination (and eventual win).
This reel represents a small sampling of the nearly 900 visual effects shots ILM contributed to the film created by an international crew of 300+.
The bulk of ILM’s work appears in the film’s third act and consists of the helicarrier’s massive underwater hanger, their ensuing battle, and the helicarriers themselves inside and out, sprawling digital Washington D.C. and Rosslyn environments including the Triskelion building complex on Roosevelt Island, highly detailed digital doubles for Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) and Falcon (Anthony Mackie).
ILM was not the only VFX house to work on ‘Captain America’ with lola, Scanline, RISE and Trixter all working in some capacity on the many visual effects shots in the film. Academy members will be voting on which films make the final nominations from the shortlist that includes ‘The Winter Soldier’ and these nine films:
‘Dawn of the Planet of the Apes
‘Guardians of the Galaxy’
‘The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies’
‘Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb’
‘Transformers: Age of Extinction’
‘X-Men: Days of Future Past’
This year’s Oscar nominations will be announced live on Thursday, January 15 at 5:30 a.m. PST.
