While Grand Junction drivers were being annoyed by rain Friday evening (November 17), drivers along the mountain sections of I-70 were being annoyed by plenty of snow and closure of the interstate.

The Colorado Department of Transportation initially had traction and chain laws in effect but ended up closing sections of I-70 from Vail to Georgetown due to numerous accidents and hazardous conditions.

As of 9 p.m. Friday night, I-70 eastbound over Vail Pass was still closed as was I-70 east and west from Empire Junction to the Eisenhauer and Johnson tunnels. There was no estimated time of reopening.

The winter storm passing through the Colorado mountains is expected to continue through Saturday morning.
